Title - Geographic Information Systems using SQL Server, SharePoint, Virtual Earth, and GeoAnalyzer

Abstract - Using mock/notional data, will provide a quick example of how to build a SQL Server Analysis Services cube from a relational database – for example number of UN Peacekeepers deployed by region in Africa.  Display data from that cube within SharePoint.  And finally project data onto geographic maps using Virtual Earth and a product called GeoAnalyzer – showing, for example, on a map how many Peacekeepers are deployed where, and even drill down and physically see the mock UN force encampment site using Virtual Earth.

In short, a tabular, Excel-type listing of countries and their UN Peacekeeper totals gives the same information as a color-code map.  But the Excel doc cannot as easily show the patterns associated with what physical locations are over/under represented.  Plus people like maps.

Title - Operational Data Replication (ODR) for Heterogenous Sources with Attunity CDC for SSIS

Abstract - During this presentation, sponsored by Attunity, you will learn how to leverage your SQL Server skills and software to reduce cost and accelerate operational data replication (ODR) and integration across heterogeneous data sources enabling operational reporting, business intelligence and data warehousing projects.  Attunity's Kevin Maguire wioll explain CDC concepts and benefits and how CDC can assist you with data replication and integration projects.   If time permits, he will demonstrate Attunity's CDC for SSIS product using SQL Server as a source to various targets.

Title - SQL Server Locking and Blocking Made Simple

Abstract - A good working knowledge of how SQL Server makes use of locking and transaction isolation levels can go a long way toward improving an application's performance. In this session, we will explore SQL Server's locking methodology and discover techniques for enhancing query response times.

Title - SQL Server Management Studio Extensibility: Custom Reports and Report Packs

Abstract - During this presentation, I’m going to show you how to create new or adapt existing Reports and integrate them with SQL Server Management Studio. Also, I’m going to explain SQL Server Management Studio Extensibility model and show you how to create Report Packs.

Bob Harford Title - SharePoint web parts to surface SQL Server geography/geometry data types

Abstract - In January we showed how to go from a text based address (such as 1400 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC) to a value stored in a SQL Server table in a Geometry data type field.

We also showed how to display data on static, color-coded maps using SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services.

The focus off this discussion will be the technical details on how to go from geometry data stored in SQL Server to dynamic maps (zoom in, zoom out) that are displayed within SharePoiont using the ESRI MapIt product.  We'll also review the difference between the geography data type and the geometry data type.

Title - How to Use the SQL Server 2008 Performance Data Collector to Analyze Query Performance

Abstract - In SQL Server 2008, the Performance Data Collector was introduced. This powerful tool collects a great variety of performance-related data, and stores it in a database so DBAs have the ability to “go back in time” and see how their well their SQL Servers are running.  While the Performance Data Collector collects a wide variety of information, one if it’s most useful features is the ability to identify and analyze poor query performance.

In this session, you will learn how to use the Performance Data Collector to analyze poorly performing queries, and what to do about them. More specifically, we will take a look at a wide variety of examples of poorly performing queries, as captured by the Performance Data Collector, and learn how we can use the data to identify specific problem queries, and then to figure out different ways to fix them.

This session is filled with demonstrations, and assumes attendees already have a fundamental understanding of how the Performance Data Collector works, as this session focuses exclusively on the “Query Statistics” feature of the Performance Data Collector. After attending the session, attendees will be able to return to work and immediately put what they have learned into practice.

Title - Troubleshooting deadlocks and other application pitfalls

Abstract - In this presentation, we will discuss several common pitfalls that can bring can cause performance issues with your applications and sometimes prevent your data from being saved.   The first pitfall is to not have the correct indexes on your tables.  Performing a table scan can not only slow down your results, but can lock the entire table, so that other users are blocked from using the application.   Poorly performing processes sometimes result in timeouts, leading to the second pitfall – not properly handling database connections.  Another major pitfall is to not properly manage your joins, resulting in deadlocks.   You will learn about some scripts and commands to detect and correct index issues, deadlock issues and the proper handling of database connections in applications.

Title - Self-Service Business Intelligence with SQL Server 2008 R2

Abstract - SQL Server® 2008 R2 ships a wealth of Business Intelligence components, broadening the reach of BI across the entire enterprise with familiar and intuitive tools and helping maximize return on investment and increasing IT efficiency at scale. This session will cover Self Service Analysis and Reporting offerings in SQL Server, Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010.  Self-Service Analysis allows users to pull from a multitude of data sources and do analysis on the client side using Powerpivot within Excel.  The analysis can then be published to a Sharepoint site where users can share the analysis across the enterprise.  SQL 2008 R2 Reporting greatly facilities ad-hoc reporting as well as include mapping controls.
